The LaGrange LinkWelcome to The LaGrange Link, a newsletter with information for clergy and laity of the LaGrange District. Our goal is to update this information monthly, so please check back frequently for news. And share our website with others in your congregation. Bishop's Day Apart Several dates in September have been set aside for a two day event offered for rest and renewal. The dates for the LaGrange District ministers are September 22-23. (If you are unable to attend on these days, you may choose alternate dates. See the brochure for other available dates.) This event will take place at Simpsonwood. All full time clergy are expected to attend this event and part time clergy are encouraged to attend. Registration deadline is September 7. To register, visit www.ngumc.org/registration. For more information, click here to download a brochure. Full time clergy who are unable to attend, need to send a written letter to the Bishop, copying the DS, with their reason for not attending.
Charge Conference Workshop
Tuesday, September 7 is the date for a Charge Conference Workshop. At this workshop we will go over how to access and complete the Charge Conference reports through Data Services. This is open to clergy and laity, but new clergy serving in their first appointment are especially encouraged to attend. The meeting will take place at the District Office. You do need to call and make a reservation so that we will be assured of having plenty of room for those participating. It should last approximately 1 hour. There will be a workshop at 1:00pm and another at 7:00 pm. Select the time most convenient for you.
Safe Sanctuary Policies
Every United Methodist Church is required to have a safe sanctuary policy in place for dealing with the prevention of and/or reporting of child sexual abuse. If your church does not have such a policy and you need help writing a policy there will be a workshop on Sunday, September 12 to assist you with this project. It will be held at the Dunson UMC in LaGrange (11 Barnard Ave.) from 2:30-4:30. You do need to register in advance. See the Children & Youth page of this website for registration information. Another workshop will be held on November 14 at the Bethany UMC in Fayetteville. Youth/Children's Worker Workshop
A workshop is being offered on Saturday, September 25 for adults who work with children and youth in the small to meduim sized church. This will be an excellent opportunity to share ideas as well as gain new information on how to reach the youth of your church. This is for clergy and/or laity. It will be held at the Leete Hill UMC in LaGrange, 9:30am-12:30pm. You do need to pre-register and there is a $5 registration fee. For more information, see the Children & Youth page of this website. Youth Leadership Session
Saturday, October 9 is the date for a special training session for youth. This is an excellent opportunity for young people who want to become more involved in the church. The topics for this workshop will be "Leaders Know What it Takes to Lead" and "Leaders Know the UMC". This session will be held at Keeney Memorial UMC in West Point, 9:30am-12:30pm. Two other sessions will be held later in the year on November 13 (Brooks UMC) and January 23 (Fayetteville 1st). Registration information can be found on the Children & Youth page of this website. Please encourage your youth to participate in these excellent events. Children's Home Offering Clergy Fellowship with DS Mission Opportunities The Pine Mountain UMC will be going on a mission trip to the Henderson Settlement in the Red Bird Missionary Conference, Frakes Kentucky, October 17-23, 2010. Team members are needed to do repair and maintenance work on the homes of elderly and poor in this poorest area of the US. Possible projects include plumbing, electrical, painting, room additions, building a porch or wheel chair ramp. There is also a need for an office worker at the center. Cost is $185 per person plus the cost of food and materials. Accommodations are comfortable and the team will cook its own meals. For more information, contact Jim Dye at 706-663-9851 or jimmar66@bellsouth.net The Peachtree City UMC is planning a trip to the Bishop Judith Craig Children's Village in Liberia, November 19-28, 2010. Cost is $2000 per person. They have been involved in this outreach ministry for about 4 years and have been greatly blessed by it.
